If you’re looking for a new podcast to sink your teeth into look no further than Pass the Mic. The podcast, created by Ella Neale and Jessie Ireland, is for young women with big ideas.
Each week the pair release a new episode on anything from social issues, to female friendships and racism. Although they’re only 18, the pair are passionate about giving a voice to young people and in particular young women.
The two became friends over a shared love for ‘Stranger things’ back in high school and since starting at the University of Canterbury have found their niche in Podcasting.
They got stated after writing a uni assignment about the medium of podcasting. The duo agreed there was something missing in the podcast world and decided they wanted to make a their own.
“There has always been a large issue with young people’s (especially young girls) ideas being swept aside and being thought of as not important; whether this is the music we like, hobbies we participate in or opinions we have.”
They want to change the narrative by giving their listeners an entertaining yet informative outlet you can enjoy while out on a walk or a study break.
Soon after launching their podcast they realised how relatable their content was to listeners. Their favourite episodes to record are their “unfiltered episodes”, in which they cover harder topics and invite others to speak on the podcast to get a diverse perspective.
“After our first Unfiltered episode we received so many messages from girls who suffered from endometriosis”. Showing the importance of talking about issues, and bring topics such as this to light. It’s clear that these girls are passionate about what they do. They want their listeners to learn more about the environment, sustainable alternatives, fast fashion retailers, mental health, periods and lots more.
Their podcast is available on iTunes and Spotify, go check them out and give them a listen.
